Morena Lake Multi-Sport Adventure Guide
With the unfortunate cancellation of the
Desert Rage San Diego Adventure Race slated for 10/15/05, we were left with a
really fun course on our hands that would otherwise go to waste. So, we
decided to go ahead and publish the guidebook along with the maps and Checkpoint
(CP)
listings to be used for training purposes. Because we are serving in a
"Publishing" capacity only, we can in no way take responsibility for
how it is used, however, it can serve as a wonderful training tool for Adventure
Racing teams looking for a good exercise. We hope you enjoy using this,
and look forward to your comments. If you find this a useful guide, please
email us at
Disclaimer: We can't say it enough. Any time you go out in the wild, you are subject to what goes on out their, be it falling off your bike, wild animals, wild people, etc. The only truly "safe" adventure is the one that never takes place. Don't ever do anything your not 100% sure of your ability to safely complete. If the trail is too steep to ride, get off and walk. If it's too steep to walk, go around. If someone is walking on the cliff above you, beware of falling rocks. You get the picture. We can tell you that a good portion of this adventure goes through an area that is regularly ridden by those on Off Highway Vehicles like Quads, motorcycles, etc. They can't hear you with their engine roaring and (hopefully) their helmet on. So, when you see & hear them, get out of their way until you are positive they see you too. Probably the most important thing you can do when doing any type of adventure is to do it with someone else; Your team. Have fun & be safe!
What you'll get:
A guide with a course description, order of events and modes of travel, safety
warning info, Required Gear, etc.
1:24,000 color maps covering the entire area. These have been tested as
waterproof and are printed on glossy laser paper. They also have faint UTM
grid's criss-crossing them which you may want to enhance by darkening over with
a pen or marker. Keep in mind that this adventure requires that you plot
checkpoints on the map based on coordinates given. Nothing about this
course is marked in any way whether on the map or at the site.
A basic see-through map overlay to help you with your plotting
coordinates.
Rather than having Orienteering flags in place, you'll be searching for
permanent landmarks, trail signs, summits, etc. with a description for each
one. You must touch the object to consider it "reached" or
answer a question based on the object; Read your instructions for each CP
thoroughly. UTM map data utilizes NAD83
datum.
The guide will arrive in a manila envelope that you can open right away.
It contains the maps, area info, required gear list, and the guidebook that
don't give you any of the course. The list of UTM coordinates, CP
descriptions, surprises, and other progression info
will be sealed in a separate included envelope, not to be opened until your
decided upon time. If you are doing this with others, you may want to
coordinate with them as to when this should be opened.
To order, Please send a check for $15.55 ($14.95
for the guide + 60cents for the stamps) to:
Sierra Adventure Sports
c/o Rick Eastman
3508 E Cortez St
Phoenix, AZ 85028
Or, if you prefer, order by credit card here:
The guides will be mailed out beginning on October 5th, 2005.
PS: When your done with it (if it's still intact), pass it along to someone who's never tried Adventure Racing. This will give them a good idea what they'd be getting themselves into, and what they're missing out on!!
Navigation & Orienteering Practice Guides
So you've read the book and watched the video's on how to use your compass
or GPS and now you need some practice, but where do you go for

even post your time here on the events page if you let us know how you
did. It could very well take you all day to complete them, or you can
split them up for different exercises. Even more exciting at
NIGHT!

Inner Tubes
We have a bunch of K-16 innertubes. This size would be typically used in
trucks or SUVS and some of them have been used in our races. They are only
$10 each and may be used in our races that involve "Adventure Tubing".
Probably seems like a strange thing to offer for sale on this site, though we've
had a number of people that want to practice "Adventure Tubing", and we have a
large volume. For those who don't know what this is, "Adventure Tubing"
involves floating on a river or lake as fast as you can utilizing kayak paddles,
swim fins, hand fins, etc. Please contact us at 602-448-0933 if you'd like
some.
Motorcycle for sale
2002 Suzuki DRZ 250. 4 stroke, electric & kick start. Runs perfect.
Pro-Circuit T-4 pipe. Acerbid Hand protectors. Low mileage/hours. Has been
sitting in garage for past 2 years aside from the quarterly start and ride
around the block. I also have the stock pipe if you need it for emissions. I had
a horn and tailight installed to be street legal in case I needed it, though
never did. Was plated in 2006.
I've put less than 100 miles on it in two years, and being a novice, they are
very gentle miles. The prior owner was a 60 yo supreme court judge. Needless to
say, this bike has probably never had a wheel off the ground.
The only issue I can identify is that the left front fork seal looks like it is
leaking. Starts and runs perfectly. Clear title.
Locals only, cash only. $2200. 602-448-0933.

Bikes for sale
Trek 8000 19.5" or 49.5 cm for guys between
5' 8" and 6' 2". Hard tail, Rockshock Judy in front. Has ultra light 20
spoke Rolf Rims. New Shimano XT shifters purchased and installed by REI in
spring though never used as I move to a softail. XT deraileurs. Avid brakes (not
disc). Brand new Bontrager race seat I took of my new bike. Brand new Shimano
SPD pedals I took off my new bike. New parts alone worth $300. Great
trail bike. Weight: 25.5 lbs. $400 Locals only, cash only.
602-448-0933. Seat in picture is not the one currently on the bike.

Women's road bike - Maruishi Alu-Tech. ALMOST BRAND NEW! Was
purchased for use at Ironman, but an injury kept it from being used. Less
than 50 miles ridden on it. I don't know the exact size but it's 19 inches
from the center of the bottom bracket to the point where the seat post is
outside of the frame. I would call it a medium size as it seems to fit a
5' 2" to 5'7" woman well. 7000 series aluminum. Profile Design Aero-bars,
Bontrager Satellite tires, Wolber Alpine rims. Shimano deraileurs. Was purchased
from Pinnacle Peak Cyclery in late 2006. Weighs 23 lbs and is
exceptionally smooth to ride. $300
Locals only, cash only. 602-448-0933.
