Extreme Heat Night Race 10-11-08
Clint
and Monte Overton doing the Block-Walk (Team OverTRON)
McDowell Mountain Regional Park isnt just a great place to ride during the day, but even more exciting under a Full Moon! The length of the course and the time allotted to finish it was extended to 24K and 4 hours. Just a little longer than we initially anticipated, which made it possible to bring in a big piece of the Pemberton Trail! A long gradual rise to a fast downhill along the top of a bluff made the night very exciting.
Jeff and Jill of Forest Pig Green felt the first of the excitement as Jeff plowed into cactus and lost mucho time picking out the quills. Tim Stefek, who lost his teammate a week early participated as a soloist and led from the initial bike ride becoming the only participant to finish in less than 3 hours. Teams of two made up the vast majority of the race with surprise leaders Clint and Monte Overton (Team OverTRON) finishing the entire course in 3:06 taking the gold dogtags for the day. In the Female division, Sarah and Hannah from ODP finished first winning all three summer Extreme Heat races! Great job ladies!
...And in the Co-ed division, Gilmore Race Director Dave Sewell and Jonea Mounsey took first after Dave shut off his light and ran in stealth mode through the night by the moonlight.
We heard great reviews from many of you, and we anticipate doing this again next summer for sure, maybe even sooner. Next up is the Desert Rage Finale. We look forward to seeing you Saguaro Lake on 12/6. There will be both a long course of 25-30 miles and a rec course of 12-15 for those who want to be able to walk on Sunday. ha ha.
Big thanks to Cindy Bearce who served as our WFR and Mark Sharpe who swept the field on Saturday night. You can't do this sport without volunteers. Another BIG Thanks to McDowell Mt. Regional Park and Rand Hubbel for providing us with a premier area to hold an event like this. For anyone interested, there are trail building events going on here to fix up the trails hurt by summer monsoon rains. Check it out.
Check out the pictures HERE. We may have more photo's later in the week, so check back on Saturday.

Extreme Heat Dreamy Draw 8-9-8

What do Adventure Racers love?
A great course, fun team, and if it's hot... a pool!
30+ teams got together at the Melrose Pool for what would turn into a
favorite race of the year for many. How in 100+ temps could they like this
punishment? Why are they smiling in the pictures?
....well, they're adventure racers
The morning started at 7am with teams having to trek 5+ miles to 5 points in the mountains using just a contour map to find their way. Along the way, they had 3 mystery events, the last of which had them diving for 15 pennies at the bottom of the pool. Upon completion, teams had a minimum 8.5 mile bike ride over some really exciting singletrack and one some roads. After finishing, it was back to the pool until we awarded first place overall to team BFC Racing's Dave and Windy Marks. Second overall and first in the all male division, team T-N-T's Todd Pendleton and Tim Stefek and just a couple minutes later, Vickie Nelson and Mike Zampino. Team ODP, with a different lineup than they fielded at Coon Bluff took the all Female division...seems they've got a whole bunch of fast lady racers!
A Giant thanks goes out to 10, yes it's true, 10 volunteers that helped make this race possible. You guys rock!
We're going to have a night race sometime between late September through October so please check back here in the next few days for more info.
Pictures here.

Extreme Heat Coon Bluff 7-12-08

50 teams took to part in Extreme Heat Coon Bluff 08. 50 teams
finished. 50 teams collected 45 bags of trash leaving the area better than
when we arrived.
Teams began with a 3 point orienteering course and two mystery events to complete in any order. In the first of the two mystery events, teams had to find the color of two separate cars in the parking lot based on the license number. Second, they had to shuttle a foam golf ball atop of a golf tee for about 20 meters without the ball dropping...not easy when you're all amp'd up with adrenalin!
After the initial section, teams began a trek that would take them all over Coon Bluff, to it's highest and lowest points and back before completing another mystery event. It was then on to a last trekking section and adventure tubing down the salt river to the finish line.
Mike Zampino and Vickie Nelson of Team Big Fish Creative used the paddle section to their advantage when they overtook Amber Naughton and James Brooks of team FLG. Team E-Lyte Sport and ODP finished first in the men's and women's divisions respectively.
And what about all those wild horses?? If anyone has pictures, please let us know. We'd love to publish them.
Thanks for participating in the trash pickup and leaving the place in way better shape then when we arrived. Adventure Racers rock!
Thanks to our great volunteers: Windy Marks, Bobby Campos, Cindy Bearce, Greg Brown, Carter, Sierra, and Kim!
Thanks to our sponsors: REI, Hammer Nutrition, Racelab, Zanfel, Road ID, BootcampChicks, Mad Mud Run, E-lyte and Justin's Nut Butter.
Giving massages from Infinite
Healing Center...Please let
Dr. Amy Jackson know you appreciate them being there.
And please feel free to contact Rob at Pristine Water (4806414464 ex 18) and let
him know the water tasted "ohhhh sooo good" after such a brutally humid day in
the desert.
We hope to see you at
Extreme
Heat Dreamy Draw which will be alot of fun, totally local to Phoenicians,
and cool with the pool. Sign up now!! Don't be afraid of the bike. After 5 years
of putting on this race, we've had nearly 100% finish rate too.
We'll be holding a Sunday morning navigation clinic on either Aug 31 or
September 14th if you're interested. 4 hours of navigation training in a limited
class/outdoor setting and everyone will receive a copy of the Piestewa Peak
Navigation Training guide as your text. We'll talk about our own races, Gilmore,
Monsoon Adventures races, and more. We'll spend a couple hours in a classroom
setting, then go out in the field in search of remote points over hilly terrain.
Thanks so much for coming out to race!! Check out the
Pictures.
Results unofficial until Friday.

Desert Rage Camp Verde 3-30-08

Let me begin with some Big thanks for making this possible: Georgie, Todd & Heather, Kim & Sara Sue (Photographer). Also, Joe Perez (Town of Camp Verde), Dr. Chuck Hammersley (NAU Professor and organizer of Verde River Canoe Challenge) & Bill Cook (National Forest Service). The stars really needed to align properly to put this race together and they did fabulously. Oh, and let's not forget the powers that put together that perfect water level of 550cfs to start.
The shuttling of racers went tremendously smooth...Thank YOU for doing this and even getting on the shuttles 15 minutes early.
To start (9am), racers had to negotiate 9 miles of fun whitewater paddling from White Bridge to just above Beasley Flats on the Verde River. Many went swimming, a couple boats were pinned against trees, many awesome racers stopped to help. This is one of the few nationally designated "Wild & Scenic" rivers in the US and it's awesome! Then, teams switched to mountain biking for few miles before they went on an intra-bike trek of about 1 mile. In doing so, they repeatedly criss-crossed a stream and hopped over a couple of waterfalls (see pics) before continuing on Chasm Creek Trail.
Back to bikes and off on hard pack, but elevation challenging forest service roads to the TA. The final section was orienteering to 6 possible points on hilltops, in canyons, along waterways and more. A few teams made it to all 6 of these with team Big Fish leading the way to become the Grand Canyon State Games Adventure Racing Champions! In the Male division, team Pinned & Screwed takes the honors while team Gilmore Adventure Race wins the Masters division.
Congratulations to everyone who raced. Some teams we hard a hard time convincing to stop...teams Chuck Norris and Chuck & Brandon wanted to keep on going, even after the 5pm cutoff. Never surrender!
Congratulations to Derrick Beracy for winning the APS Power Player Trophy! Derrick (and his team of Tish Taylor and Greta Nowak) stopped racing to help a team in in a precarious position on the river (as did others including team Madness), he stopped to help a team who was running low on water and he stopped to help a team with a flat tire. When a racer does all that at the expense of his own finish time they are going above and beyond. Adventure Racers ROCK! Thank You Derrick!
Along with stamping their passports along the way, teams were able to collect a series of words on pink flagging tape within a few meters of each flag. Of those that collected 6 or more words, we had a drawing for a free entry into the Las Vegas Desert Dash compliments of Jeff Hobbs. Thanks Jeff.
If anyone has a race review, please post it to the AARB newsgroup or Adventure-Race-Reports.com or just send it to us and let us know how we did.
...and check out these incredible photo's from SaraSue! Nice Work.
